Retaining the character of a property
The Challenge
We were approached to copy a period door for a Tudor House in the Harrogate area. This was an exciting project for one of our skilled craftsmen as the door has a number of unique features.

The property has been developed over the years and the door is no longer needed as an access point to the house, the owners wanted to replace the door with an identical copy, as a fixed (none opening) feature.
The Solution
The original door was removed and brought to our workshop.
Precise measurements were taken from the rails, panels etc. to ensure the design was replicated exactly.
All the quirks from the original design were retained but the modern timber Accoya® was used to create the new door. This timber has a 50-year guarantee against insect and fungal attacks, ensuring longevity.
The hand-forged ironmongery was painstaking removed, including the original doorbell, These were soaked to strip the age-old layers of paint, then each piece of the ironmongery was cleaned up and re-painted by hand to maintain the authentic look.
The three glass panels with a circular pattern known as Crown or Bulls Eye glass were delicately removed. These were soaked and cleaned of all old putty and paint, ready to be re-sited in the new door.
Finished in Teknos Pure White. The replicated door has all the character of the pre-existing door, with all the benefits of contemporary craftsmanship, high-performance materials and modern water-borne paint covering.
Customer Comments
My wife & I are delighted with the end product.
The replacement Door is an exact replica of the original 1936 Tudor theme and should last as long! The craftmanship and attention details is excellent and the Carpenter who delivered it back to us himself should be justifiably proud.
We have no hesitation in recommending Powell Joinery for their workmanship and skill on what was not an easy task from us!
