How to make an entrance
The Challenge
Vivien owns a beautiful cottage in a small village location between Knaresborough and York. She contacted us as the front door to the cottage was tired and she was looking to replace the draughty old door and add a decorative canopy.
Vivien had a clear idea of what she wanted and supplied us with some pictures of her ideal door and canopy to show us the look she wanted to achieve.

The Solution
The door is made in Accoya®, constructed using individual panels jointed and locked together inside a frame. Using Accoya reduces the risk of timber swelling or shrinking by 75% or more, which means the door will continue to open effortlessly all year round.
Traditional style door furniture consisting of 3 substantial hand-forged pieces. A solid door knocker, tudor-style handle and a letterplate with internal tidy, with a 3* Euro cylinder lock to deliver high-level security, supplied in black to blend in with the door furniture.
The double-glazed unit in the small viewing window is Planitherm One toughened glass in decorative Canterbury pattern. This offers energy efficiency, security and an element of privacy while enhancing the ornamental look of the door.
Factory finished in two-tone using Teknos coatings. The external colour is classic F&B Worsted to match the canopy and frame, inside a clean white colour was applied to reflect light in the entrance hall of the cottage.
The over-door canopy is made from Accoya® which guarantees longevity. The scalloped edge was machine-carved, checking the design with the customer every step of the way. The central finial was hand-turned by the very talented Martyn Rogers, based on the specifications provided. This will be finished with overlapped slate tiles.
Both items were fit on-site by Powell Joinery. This project was truly a team effort!
Customer Comments
I have just had a front door made and fitted plus an over the door decorative canopy. The craftmanship is fantastic and both items have been spray painted by the company and the finish is excellent. The 2 chaps who did the fitting were tidy and respectful of my cottage. All round brilliant service and have made me a very happy bunny!! Would use this company again-nothing has been too much trouble from start to finish. Thanks very much.
